The Historic Sugar Mill of Hòfi Mango

Before 1700, sugar cane was cultivated on a few plantations in Curaçao, particularly in swampy areas such as Santa Cruz. However, due to the low yield, sugar production was not commercially viable. Instead, the harvested sugar cane was used to produce rum for the local market, a practice that played a significant role in the island’s early economy.

In 1707, Father Schnabel referred to this locally distilled rum as “money devil”, highlighting both its value and its intoxicating effects. Rum production was a key part of plantation life, but historical records do not clearly indicate when it ceased. What remains certain is that the sugar mill and its distillery were once central to the plantation’s operations.

Today, the sugar mill has been restored and designated as a legally protected monument, ensuring that this important piece of Curaçao’s heritage is preserved for future generations. During restoration efforts, the Archaeological Working Group identified remains of masonry from what is believed to be the original distillery, shedding light on the early rum-making practices of the island.

As part of the restoration project, the interior of the sugar mill will also be carefully restored to its original condition, bringing it back to life as it once stood centuries ago. Additionally, the original hood with blades will be reinstalled, completing the mill’s authentic reconstruction and honoring its historical significance.
